What's the big deal?

Euphoric. Psychedelic. Magic. There are a multitude of words that can be used to describe the feel of the sixties and how the introduction of vibrancy impacted not only the world of fashion, but industries such as music and film as well. Makeup was boldening, dresses were shortening and hair was volumizing; the sixties allowed for an emergence of icons and it's safe to say there was an eruption of a new era that was unlike anything anyone had seen before.

The Top Reasons why Twiggy is the Ultimate 60’s Icon

The legendary model and film star, Twiggy, was without a doubt one of if not the most influential female figures of the sixties. The 'queen of mod' - an appropriate title - was not afraid of embracing the explosion of colourful clothing during this time; modelling came easy to her as her passion for sewing and design complimented with her love for being in front of a camera. She was compliant with wearing colours like pink and yellow that weren't often considered fashionable in previous eras - on top of this, her statement shift dresses were certainly iconic and sparked their popularity amongst women around the world. It can be argued that her prominent makeup look of bold, black liner with fake eyelashes as well as incorporating a juxtaposing pink lip enabled the growth of experimenting in this era, especially for women. The fame she was exposed to at a young age enabled her to grow into her own person despite the pressure that comes with being in the spotlight constantly - her refusal of recommended plastic surgery as she aged inspired a lot of women to accept themselves as they are which is still a message that many female celebrities promote to this day.

Melodies of the Sixties

The Beatles, Elvis, Bob Dylan - all household names of musicians that peaked during the sixties are still adored and listened to frequently in modern times. The release of Abbey Road was arguably a very large cultural reset for The Beatles' fanbase and the music industry in general; in spite of the album being made public in the late sixties (1969), it can be considered a monumental piece of art that encapsulated the aura of this time and was a celebration of the Swinging Sixties era. Many artists have also stated that the incredibly popular singer Elvis Presley left a great legacy for other artists to build off of - Rod Stewart paid tribute to his friend by saying: "Elvis was the king. No doubt about it. People like myself, Mick Jagger and all the others only followed in his footsteps." The uplifting music worked in tangent with keeping society especially for Western Culture alive even though tragedies were occurring more and more as this decade went on such as the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King. The artists of this decade followed the well-known trend of the 'Mods and Rockers' movement, people of all genders embraced masculinity by wearing predominantly smooth tailored pieces which ultimately began the expression of identity for a lot of people therefore kick starting the 'Flower Power' movement of the 70s.
